2024 Forest Fires: 1956 Fires Due to Negligence and Carelessness

The year 2024 was quite challenging for Turkey in terms of forest fires. A total of 3,797 forest fires occurred, of which 1,956 were attributed to negligence, carelessness, intent, and accidents.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, our forest area covers 23 million 363 thousand 84 hectares. However, a large part of this area is under the threat of fire. In Turkey, especially in the Mediterranean climate zone, 64% of the forests are classified as first and second-degree fire-sensitive areas.
Last year, a total of 27,484.56 hectares were affected by these fires. Fires caused by negligence and carelessness are among the biggest threats to our forests.
Regions such as Izmir, Mugla, and Antalya experienced the highest number of forest fires. The Izmir Forest Regional Directorate recorded 397 fires, making it the most affected area.
Last year, 16,673 crime reports were issued in the fight against forest crimes. This is considered an important step in protecting our forests.
