Impersonator Mimics US Secretary of State Using AI

The voice of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was impersonated using artificial intelligence. This incident led to the emergence of a fraudster contacting high-profile individuals.
According to a report by The Washington Post, an unidentified individual reached out to at least five people, including two foreign foreign ministers, a US governor, and a member of Congress, by mimicking Rubio's voice and writing style.
The impersonator communicated via both text messages and the Signal application. Documents from Rubio's office suggest that the perpetrator aimed to manipulate powerful government officials.
The incident began when the impersonator created a Signal account under the name “Marco.Rubio@state.gov.” This email address is not Rubio's actual email address.
The US State Department announced that an investigation is underway regarding the incident and that measures will be implemented to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Hany Farid, a digital forensics expert from Berkeley University, stated that mimicking a person's voice using AI can be done with a 15-20 second audio recording, making it easier for fraudsters to succeed.
