The scales of justice in Turkey have once again tipped. Operations targeting CHP municipalities amid corruption allegations are raising political tensions.

Some mayors elected from CHP in the 2024 local elections switched to AKP shortly after facing corruption allegations. Surprisingly, investigations against these individuals were halted or shelved after their transition.

However, raids, arrests, and detentions against loyal CHP mayors continued. The recent operation against Bayrampaşa Municipality exemplifies this double standard.

Umut Yılmaz, the mayor of Şehitkamil in Gaziantep, was embroiled in allegations of misconduct shortly after being elected from CHP. However, instead of investigating these claims, President Erdoğan awarded him a badge.

The operation wave against CHP municipalities continued with Bayrampaşa Municipality. A total of 44 suspects, including Mayor Hasan Mutlu, were detained.

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation against the CHP-led Bayrampaşa Municipality for charges including embezzlement and bribery. This situation once again highlights the contentious nature of Turkey's justice system.
