Parkinson’s Law-Using Time Efficiently

British historian and writer Cyril Northcote Parkinson wrote in the opening line of an article published in The Economist in 1955: "The work expands to fill the time available for completion." This phrase was first written to criticize the current bureaucratic system, and later it was developed and became known as the 'Parkinson's Law'.

In fact, we are talking about a situation that we frequently encounter in our working life and daily life. Sometimes because of the things we postponed, sometimes because of the events that happened to us, we may have to do a 1-week job in 1 day, or we may have 2 hours left for 10 hours of work. In this situation, we realize that we can get things done in a short time. In fact, sometimes we see that the jobs we deal with for a week are worse than the jobs for a day. At this point, we are reading the lines of someone who has noticed this before and even put it in writing.

"The work expands to fill the time available for completion."

So how can we use this to our advantage?

-Procrastinate productively: Analyze what needs to be done. Calculate how long it will take you to do this. For example, suppose you have a report that you have to complete over the weekend. If you start writing the report from Friday evening, it will cover your entire weekend. If you think it will take you 3 hours to write the report, you can start writing on Sunday evening. In this way, you will have a productive time.

-Limit your time: Set specific timeframes for what needs to be done. For example, check your emails for 10 minutes in the morning every day. Or aim to learn a math topic in 30 minutes while preparing for the exam. You will realize that you work more efficiently due to the limited delivery date. For detailed information, you can review the 'Pomodoro Technique'.

-Prioritize tasks: Rank what needs to be done in order of both importance and time to do it. If there are jobs that will be finished in a short time, you can get them done first. For example, if you need to call your land agent during the day, you can do it right away. In this way, you can prevent short-time jobs from occupying your mind.
