The Rich: The Main Culprits of Global Warming

A man in a suit throwing money.

Global warming has become one of the most pressing issues today. But who is the biggest culprit behind this problem?

A new study reveals that the wealthiest 10% of the world's population is responsible for about two-thirds of global warming since 1990. Researchers from ETH Zurich link this situation to inequality among income groups.

According to the research, the richest 1% contributes 26 times more to extreme heat waves compared to the global average. This situation exacerbates the effects of climate change.

Carl-Friedrich Schleussner states, "If everyone produced emissions like the bottom 50%, the world would see minimal additional warming." Addressing this imbalance is vital for fair and effective climate action.

The ecological footprints of the wealthy are vastly larger than those of low and middle-income individuals. Therefore, climate policies must consider the responsibilities of the wealthiest members of society.
