RTÜK Imposes 5-Day Broadcast Blackout on TELE1!

The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has imposed a 5-day broadcast blackout on TELE1. This penalty was issued due to comments made by Merdan Yanardağ regarding the July 15 coup attempt.
RTÜK member İlhan Taşcı stated that this decision was based on the claim of inciting hatred and hostility. Taşcı remarked, "On the anniversary of the lifting of censorship, they continue to punish critical broadcasts."

The justification for the penalty was the comments made in TELE1's program regarding the AKP government's role in the July 15 coup attempt. This situation reignites discussions about press freedom.
Additionally, it was stated that if TELE1 receives the same penalty again within a year, its license will be revoked. This indicates an increase in pressure on media outlets.

This incident raises serious concerns about press freedom and freedom of expression in Turkey. The pressures on media organizations pose a threat to a democratic society.
