Press Freedom in the US Hits Record Low!

An image related to press freedom in the US.

In the United States, press freedom has reached its lowest level in history according to the World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders. Known as the 'land of freedom', the US is losing its liberties under the Trump administration.

The index now ranks the US's press freedom level alongside developing countries like Gambia, Uruguay, and Sierra Leone. While physical threats against journalists are a clear indicator of the erosion of press freedom, the main determinant is economic pressure.

The report cites the Trump administration's attempts to cut budgets for public broadcasters like Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty as an example of this trend. Additionally, the takeover of advertising economics by major internet platforms is highlighted as a factor threatening the financing of journalism.

It is noted that local press outlets are rapidly closing down, leading to an unprecedented increase in 'news deserts' across the country. This situation poses a significant threat to the healthy functioning of democracy.
