Return of Syrians: Hopes and Challenges Ahead

Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, over 1.4 million Syrians have returned home. These returns are seen as a hopeful development after years of displacement.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees emphasized the need to support Syrians in rebuilding their lives. They require significant assistance in areas such as housing, health, education, and livelihood.
UNHCR Commissioner Filippo Grandi stated that approximately 280,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their country, with over 800,000 displaced internally. However, he stressed that recovery efforts must be accelerated to ensure sustainable returns.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that since December 9, 2024, 175,512 Syrians have voluntarily returned to their homeland. These returns have accelerated with the end of the civil war in Syria.
Yerlikaya noted that there are a total of 4,043,000 foreigners in Turkey, with 2,782,000 of them under temporary protection. The pain and challenges created by the war are the realities behind these returns.
