The attack on CHP leader Özgür Özel has shaken Turkey's agenda. The assailant Selçuk Tengioğlu's past crimes are drawing attention.

The attack occurred after Özgür Özel attended a funeral for Sırrı Süreyya Önder. The assailant, 66-year-old Selçuk Tengioğlu, has a criminal record for killing two of his children in 2004.

Tengioğlu killed his two children in Hatay in 2004 and was paroled in 2020. Following the attack, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Justice made statements regarding the incident.

Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç stated that the attack would be thoroughly investigated and that the assailant would receive the punishment he deserves. Investigations into possible instigators are also ongoing.

Özgür Özel's health condition is reported to be good. The CHP condemned this despicable attack and demanded that both the assailant and any instigators be punished.
