Climate Change and Global Warming: Mosquitoes Sound the Alarm

Global warming is causing an increase in mosquito-borne diseases in Europe. This situation poses a serious threat to public health.

ECDC Director Pamela Rendi-Wagner stated that Europe has entered a new normal period. By 2025, 27 chikungunya outbreaks have been detected, and West Nile virus cases have reached the highest level in the last three years.

Rising temperatures, milder winters, and changing rainfall patterns create ideal conditions for virus-carrying mosquitoes. The Aedes albopictus species, which was found in only 114 regions a decade ago, is now seen in 16 European countries and 369 regions.

West Nile virus cases are also appearing in new geographical areas every year. In 2025, cases were detected for the first time in Italy and Romania. This indicates that more people in Europe are at risk.

Chikungunya virus presents symptoms such as fever, joint pain, and rashes. With limited vaccine options, preventing infections remains the most effective method.
