Recent Developments in Turkey-EU Relations

Turkey has reached an important turning point in its relations with the European Union. Greece and Southern Cyprus continue to veto Turkey's participation in the EU's 150 billion Euro Defense Fund.
Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis stated that Turkey's attempt to extend its territorial waters in the Aegean to 12 miles is considered a cause for war. Turkey has maintained its stance without backing down.

While the European Council expected Turkey to back down, Turkey did not participate in the sharing of the 150 billion Euro fund. Southern Cyprus received 1 billion 181 million Euros, while Greece received 787 million Euros.
During the visit of the German Foreign Minister to Athens, pressure is expected to be exerted on Turkey to participate in the SAFE program. Greece reiterated that it would not approve Turkey's participation.

Greece is trying to prevent Turkey from increasing its military presence in the Aegean by threatening to veto Turkey's participation in the SAFE program. This situation is escalating tensions between the two countries.
