How Did I Manage To Gain The Habit of Reading After The Age of 29?
I had never read a book in my life. I can say that I spent my youth playing games on the PC. I am still playing btw.
Then, I have started a reading maraton for my self and it changed my whole life.
I have read more than 160 books in three years. This led to many important changes in my life. That is an another story, but if I can do it, anyone can.
After gaining the habit of reading, people’s view of me changed. I no longer hesitate to speak in public. I can express myself better and I have seen the benefits in both my private and business life.
I want to share my method in all platforms, so everybody make use of. I will start explaning it item by item.
- Firstly, reading is a seriuous job and You need to take it seriously.
- Every hobby has its challenges. You have to start by accepting them. You may ask, what could be the hardest part of reading a book? In a time of so many distractions (TV, internet, mobile phone etc), believe me, it’s really hard.
- There should be a place to read in your home or office. Maybe a desk, chair, or bergere. It doesn’t matter. As soon as you sit there, your brain should know that reading has begun.
- Establish a routine. Read at the same time every day and read for the same amount of time.
- If possible, try to sit down and read. You can’t get into a habit by trying to read a book five minutes before you go to sleep.
- If you do not understand what you read and you feel sleepy while reading, try reading aloud. In this way, you will hear your own voice and your sleep will be disturbed. Your understanding capacity increases.
- While reading aloud, walking around the room and getting into character, especially if you are reading a novel, can be beneficial for feeling the story.
- Especially while trying to gain the habit of reading, choose only the books that interest you.
- Be careful not to read books with similar content one after another. Different content will increase your interest. Similar topics get boring after a while.
- If a book bores you, if it doesn’t interest you, leave it.
- If you’re having trouble choosing a book, you can look at lists like “100 must-read books.”
- At the same time, you can follow the suggestions of the people you like to follow and who are opinion leaders. I had the chance to read very high quality books by following the book recommendations of people whose style I like.
- Try to avoid or limit social media. I didn’t close my accounts, but I deleted apps from my phone.
- Turn off all unnecessary notifications on your phone, except for calls and messages. In this way, you can concentrate for a long time without being interrupted.
- If you can’t do either, at least put the phone in the other room or away from you.
- Although e-books seem very advantageous, research shows that printed books are more effective. For this reason, at least initially, prefer printed books.
- Make sure to use the libraries in your school or neighborhood. In this way, you will have the chance to access many books at the same time and you will have the chance to benefit from it for free.
- One of the good motivational methods is to join reading groups and find people to discuss books.
In My Experience
If you are not going to show the necessary dedication and take the time, accept this from the beginning. Don’t fool yourself.
Novels offer a chance to emigrate to other lands. You can try other lives, share their feelings and thoughts.
Non-fiction books are about sharing the experiences of others. In a few hours, you can have the experiences that people have had by spending their lives.
You will realize that the more you read, the better you start to speak and write better.
I tried different habits and hobbies in his 33-year life. I have not come across any other activity that gives me meaning as much as reading a book.
Don’t Forget
Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, recommends dedicating at least an hour straight to reading. It is not possible to form a habit by taking five or ten minutes during the day.
