Global Warming and Water Crisis: Our Future at Risk

Global warming and the water crisis pose a serious threat worldwide.

According to the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) report, only one-third of river basins worldwide recorded normal conditions in 2024. This indicates the sixth year of water imbalance.

The report noted that 450 gigatons of ice were lost globally in 2024, raising sea levels by 1.2 millimeters, posing risks to hundreds of millions of people living in coastal areas.

Extreme weather events are exacerbating this crisis. For instance, severe rains in tropical Africa resulted in the deaths of 2,500 people.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo stated that water sustains societies and empowers economies, but the world's water resources are under increasing pressure.

To raise environmental awareness and take global action, the United Nations recognized June 5 as World Environment Day. Events are held on this day to draw attention to environmental issues.
