Climate Change Increases Sugar Consumption

Climate change is increasing our sugar consumption! According to new research, as temperatures rise, sugary drinks and sweets are consumed more.
Researchers from Cardiff University examined food purchasing behaviors of U.S. households from 2004 to 2019. For every 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature, daily sugar consumption increases by 0.7 grams per person.
This effect is particularly pronounced in low-income and low-education households. Researchers predict that if greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced, daily sugar consumption per person will increase by 3 grams by 2095.
This increase will further raise the risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. The American Heart Association recommends that no more than 6% of daily calories come from added sugars.
For men, this means 36 grams of sugar per day, and for women, it means 26 grams. Fighting climate change is crucial for a healthy future.
