Trump had previously withdrawn the US from UNESCO. This decision was first made in 1984, and the US returned to membership in 2003.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay expressed deep sadness over this decision. It is viewed as contrary to the fundamental principles of multilateralism.
