Syria Introduces New Banknotes for Economic Modernization

The Central Bank of Syria has announced the issuance of six new banknotes to modernize the national currency. These new banknotes will not feature images or symbols.
Central Bank President Husariyye stated that the new banknotes will come in different sizes. This step is intended to replace old and worn-out currency as part of economic modernization.
Details about the new banknotes will be shared after the printing process is completed. However, it is emphasized that these banknotes do not aim to expand the money supply.

The significant devaluation of the Syrian lira against the dollar has made daily shopping difficult. Families are forced to use 5,000 lira banknotes for their weekly needs.
It is reported that an agreement has been made with the Russian company Goznak for the printing of the new banknotes. This is seen as an effort to increase Syria's economic independence.
Currently, the existing banknotes feature images of Bashar Assad and his father Hafiz Assad. The removal of these symbols in the new banknotes carries a political message.
