Learning principles and theories
We all acquire a lot of knowledge and skills throughout our lives. By interacting with our environment, we learn something new. As a result of the knowledge and skills we have learned, changes occur in our thoughts and behaviors. Learning theories try to explain how these changes occur.
The principles of learning are a guide. The teaching job gets better thanks to this guide. The principles tell which factor is effective in relation to the person. Theories, on the other hand, tell us why these factors are important.
Example 1:
One day I told my students that we were going to do group work in the classroom. They had never experienced group work since they were first-year students. And when the group work started to get a little noisy, I told them, "if the groups work quietly and calmly, the classroom seating arrangement in other classes can be in the form of a group." The students were happy and understood the importance of group work.
In this lesson, I wanted my students to acquire a desired behavior. So, as a reward, I offered to change the teaching environment in a way that they would like. Since the environmental factors changed according to the people, the behavior of the individuals also changed in a positive way.
Example 2:
One day when the weather was very hot, I told the students, "we will play football outside together in the other lesson" in order to make the lesson efficient. I used positive reinforcement thanks to the idea of doing an activity with them. My goal was to increase positive behaviors more.
In these examples, it is about the principles by which factors can be effective according to the person. For example, like sitting in a group and playing football together. Why these factors are important is related to theories. For example, to change an individual's behavior in a positive way.
