Climate Change and the Major Transformation of Lake Van

Climate change is leading to major transformations in Lake Van. Drought is causing the lake to retreat significantly.
The changes in Lake Van over the past 17 years have been documented by nature photographer Ferzende Coşar. Areas that were once submerged are now exposed.

Dr. Mustafa Akkuş from Van Yüzüncü Yıl University states that the loss of water in the lake is accelerating due to drought and rising temperatures. The lake has no external water inflow.
The decrease in rainfall and increased evaporation are causing the lake to shrink rapidly. Last winter, rainfall was significantly below seasonal norms.

Along the Erciş shores, the emerging microbialites resemble the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia. These structures attract the attention of photographers and contribute to the promotion of the region.
