Volcanic Lakes and Traces of Thousands of Years of Eruptions

Volcanic lakes carry traces of eruptions from thousands of years ago. Apoyeque and Laguna Xiloa are notable for their interesting structures.

Chiltepe Peninsula is located 16 kilometers northwest of the capital Managua. According to NASA's data, this area was formed by pyroclastic shield eruptions.

Apoyeque Lake is 1.7 km wide and located within a caldera. Laguna Xiloa can expand up to 2.4 km.

Both lakes are technically still classified as active volcanoes. However, there have been no eruptions for thousands of years. The last eruption occurred about 6,000 years ago.

Experts indicate that there is magma movement beneath Apoyeque. If it erupts again, it could affect Managua and surrounding settlements.
