Will Turkey Establish a Disaster Ministry After the Earthquake?

Turkey experienced great sorrow after the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes on February 6, 2023, resulting in 53,537 fatalities. This tragedy has brought the issue of earthquakes back to the forefront.
The Turkish Grand National Assembly is discussing the establishment of a Disaster Ministry following the earthquake. The report emphasizes the need to strengthen AFAD.
President Erdoğan stated, "The establishment of a Disaster Ministry is on the agenda. AFAD exists, but it is not at the level of a ministry."
The new ministry aims to build earthquake-resistant cities and raise public awareness about earthquakes. New steps are also being taken in education and health sectors.
Turkey experienced over 32,000 earthquakes in 2023. The Kahramanmaraş earthquakes resulted in the highest number of casualties this year.
The establishment of a Disaster Ministry could enhance Turkey's preparedness for natural disasters. This would be an important step in ensuring public safety.
