Glacier Collapse in Switzerland: A Village is Lost

The village of Blatten in Switzerland's Valais canton faced a major disaster due to a glacier piece breaking off from the Alps.
Authorities reported that 1 person is missing and that the village was evacuated on May 19 as a precaution. The village is now buried under thousands of tons of mud and ice. Mayor Matthias Bellwald stated, "We have lost our village. We will rebuild it."
According to NASA's research, glacier retreats in the Alps are increasing due to climate change. This situation could herald not only losses in the village but also larger disasters.
Emergency teams are actively searching for missing persons, but no injuries have been reported as of Wednesday evening.
Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter expressed her sorrow, stating, "Losing your home is terrible. I feel for the residents of Blatten." This incident once again highlights the impacts of climate change.
