Climate Change and Fungal Disease: Europe and Asia at Risk

An image related to climate change and fungal disease.

The effects of climate change are becoming more pronounced every day. Recent research indicates that Europe and Asia are under threat from deadly fungal diseases.

Scientists from the University of Manchester highlight that the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus can lead to serious respiratory diseases. This fungus is currently mainly found in Africa and South America, but it is expected to spread to northern regions due to climate change.

The lead author of the study, Norman van Rhijn, emphasized that treating these fungal infections is extremely difficult. He noted that fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions will play a significant role in the spread of the fungus.

Experts predict that the area of spread of this fungus could increase by 77% by 2100 due to climate change. This situation threatens the health of approximately nine million people in Europe.

It is noted that individuals with chronic lung diseases and weakened immune systems are at risk. A warning has been issued for these individuals to be cautious.
