Greece Takes Measures Against Migrant Influx

Greece is suspending asylum applications in response to the influx of migrants on Crete. This decision is seen as a temporary measure taken by the government to deal with extraordinary situations.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis compared this situation to the migration crisis experienced in 2020, stating that migrants entering the country illegally will be detained. New closed structures are planned to be established in Crete.
In the last 48 hours, around 2,000 migrants have entered Crete. Since the beginning of the year, more than 9,000 migrants have reached Crete, marking an increase of over 350% compared to last year.
Local officials have reported that the deputy mayor responsible for social policies in Hania stated, "We are at the peak of our hosting capacity." Emergency government intervention calls are ongoing.
The Mayor of Rethymno stated, "These are large influxes, an unprecedented situation." It is reported that more than 10,000 people are waiting to be brought to Crete from Libya.
