UN Warning on Tariffs: Developing Countries Should Be Exempt

A man in a suit and tie.

The United Nations has stated that rising tariffs should not affect developing countries. This situation is critical for the future of international trade.

According to a report published by UNCTAD, the rules-based system has increased international trade in recent years and contributed to the gradual reduction of customs duties. However, high tariffs imposed by major economies are raising trade tensions.

The report emphasizes that the poorest and most vulnerable developing economies should be exempt from reciprocal tariffs. It was noted that these countries have minimal contributions to the US trade deficit.

If reciprocal tariffs are reintroduced, it may weaken demand for many imported goods due to high prices. This situation could increase consumer prices.

In particular, increasing tariffs on agricultural products from countries like Madagascar, Ivory Coast, and Ghana could raise prices for these products, affecting consumers' wallets.
