Combatting Mucilage in the Marmara Sea and Inspections

Efforts against mucilage in the Marmara Sea are ongoing!
The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change is conducting strict inspections to combat the mucilage threat in the Marmara Sea. Significant fines have been imposed on facilities that have not transitioned to advanced biological treatment during inspections in Tekirdağ.
Following the emergence of mucilage in 2021, a 22-item protection action plan was established. However, sufficient progress has not been made in implementing this plan.
Simultaneous inspections are being conducted at 480 facilities in the Marmara Sea. These inspections check whether existing wastewater treatment facilities meet standards.
Minister Murat Kurum stated that municipalities are not taking enough responsibility in the fight against mucilage and emphasized the need for greater effort in this regard.
Natural solutions such as seagrasses and pinna mussels are aimed at preventing mucilage. These projects are crucial for protecting the ecosystem of the Marmara.
