Earthquakes in the Marmara Region and Potential Hazards

Recent earthquakes in the Marmara Region continue to be a source of concern for the local population. The tremors, especially concentrated in Balıkesir, have raised alarms.
Following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake on August 10, two separate tremors of 4.5 magnitude were recorded in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir. These tremors were felt in Istanbul and surrounding provinces as well.
Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated that these earthquakes should be closely monitored regarding the "Gelenbe fault". He warned that Balıkesir city center could be affected by this fault.
Experts emphasize that the recent earthquakes increase the risks of landslides and soil erosion. Therefore, it is crucial for citizens to be cautious and take necessary precautions.
The recent earthquakes in the region indicate that the risks are rising compared to past major earthquakes. Hence, disaster management and preparedness efforts need to be accelerated.
