Turks Flock to Greece for Cheap Food Shopping

High inflation and rising food prices are directing Turks to Greece for shopping.
Markets in Dedeağaç are filled with Turkish consumers. Cihan Çıtak, who travels from Istanbul to Dedeağaç, can buy food products at half the price compared to Turkey. For instance, olive oil costs 10 euros per liter here, while it is twice that in Turkey.

Turkish visitors share their shopping experiences on social media. Price comparisons on YouTube and TikTok are viewed millions of times. For example, ground beef costs 9.36 euros at the Lidl market in Dedeağaç, while it is 12.10 euros in Turkey.
Rising food prices and the Turkish lira's appreciation have made Greece attractive for Turkish consumers. According to the Greek Statistical Authority, 6% of Turks crossing the border in the first nine months of the year did so for shopping purposes.
Turks are not only shopping for cheap food in Greece but also enjoying vacations. High inflation is directing citizens to the neighboring country. Tour companies are organizing day trips for shopping in Greece.
