Uranium Crisis in Greece: Effects on the Aegean Sea and the Balkans

Uranium has been found in drinking water in Greece! This situation threatens public health in the Aegean Sea and the Balkans.
Heraklia Mayor Kleanthis Koçakiahidis announced that high levels of uranium were detected in the underground water sources of Melenikitsi and Hortero villages. Following this detection, the use of water for drinking and cooking has been prohibited.
Authorities have implemented emergency measures to protect public health and have initiated efforts to bring the water back to safe levels. A similar situation occurred in Serres on May 28.
The Secretary General of Civil Protection declared a state of emergency in the settlements of Serres, Lefkonas, and Kristos. This decision aims to facilitate the fight against the water problem.
This state of emergency will last until June 26 and will provide financial support to the relevant municipalities.
