Greece's Moves in the Eastern Mediterranean and Turkey's Response

Map of the Eastern Mediterranean

Greece has escalated tensions by opening a hydrocarbon exploration tender in the Eastern Mediterranean. Libya has stated that this step is contrary to international law.

In the documents submitted by Libya to the UN, it was expressed that Greece's unilateral moves violate Tripoli's sovereign rights. Greece has previously taken similar steps.

Turkey has reacted strongly to Greece's maritime claims. The International Court of Justice invalidated some of these claims.

Greece's hydrocarbon exploration tender was brought to the forefront due to interest from the US-based Chevron. This situation may further intensify energy competition in the region.

The maps submitted by Libya to the UN also included the boundaries established by the Maritime Boundary Agreement signed between Turkey and Libya, which is considered an important step in protecting legitimate rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.
